Otis Moore faced a challenging journey when an ingrown toenail developed into a chronic diabetic foot ulcer (DFU). Due to his neuropathy, a condition that causes numbness due to nerve damage, the toenail never caused him pain and continued to worsen. If you are diabetic, Diabetic foot checks are recommended to ensure ulcers/wounds are found and treated early.
When Otis finally discovered his ulcer, he tried to treat it himself. After several unsuccessful attempts, he visited a podiatrist who consulted with his primary care doctor. His primary care physician then referred him to St. James Parish Hospital’s Wound Healing Center.
Otis was evaluated by our team who specializes in wound healing and began seeing our specialists weekly until his ulcer healed. Now affectionately called a “sore loser” because he healed from a chronic, hard-to-heal wound (sore), he is happy to share his gratitude for our team with his community.
Otis explained that the staff made him feel comfortable and cared for each week, even making him look forward to his appointments. He added that their expertise and genuine concern for his well-being was evident in every interaction.
“From my very first visit, everyone was incredibly kind and in good spirits. I truly believe they should clone this staff or teach others how to do what they do here,” said Otis.
“Thanks to their dedication and care, my wound has healed and I’m back on my feet. I can’t thank them enough!”
The likelihood of nonhealing wound complications increases the longer a wound is left untreated, especially when a patient suffers from diabetes. Patients do not need a referral to see a specialist at St. James Parish Hospital’s Wound Care Center which is located in Lutcher inside the Medical Plaza next to the hospital.
